How to list for standby on Air New Zealand

Listing is mandatory on all NZ flights when you use myIDTravel.

  • The listing is created automatically when you buy your eticket.
  • If the date you originally listed for has passed, open your ticket in myIDTravel and list again for the new date.
  • Premium Economy (O class) can't be booked in myIDTravel.
  • Domestic New Zealand fares in myIDTravel include Goods and Services Tax (GST). It is shown under 'Total Government Taxes', not in the 'Fare', and is rounded to 1 decimal place in NZD.

Standby is popular on Air NZ. If you need to be sure of your seat, buy a commercial fare at www.airnewzealand.com.

Flights you can't use

  • Only flights operated by Air New Zealand can be used. Air NZ codeshares can't be booked.
  • Bus, train and ferry services aren't included.
  • When commercial demand is high, Air NZ may temporarily embargo flights for interline staff travelers.

Baggage

  • One checked bag per person, up to 23 kg, on domestic, trans-Tasman, Pacific Islands and most long-haul flights.
  • Flights to Singapore, Taipei and Shanghai: two checked bags, up to 23 kg each.
  • Extra bags can be bought at the airport at the normal excess baggage rate.
  • Infants have no baggage allowance of their own, but a stroller and/or car seat travels free.

Check-in

Check which terminal your flight leaves from. Auckland Airport, for example, has two terminal buildings, Domestic and International: aucklandairport.co.nz

  • Domestic New Zealand flights: go to the Air NZ economy check-in desk at least 40 minutes before departure.
  • International flights: go to the Air NZ economy check-in desk 2–3 hours before departure.

Plan for minimum connection times: generally 3+ hours for international and 45 minutes for domestic New Zealand flights.

Boarding, seats and upgrades

Standby passengers are onloaded at the boarding gate if there is space, in order of boarding priority and then date of joining (DOJ).

  • Economy is the only class on New Zealand domestic flights and on many trans-Tasman and Pacific Islands flights.
  • If standby business class is part of your agreement and you booked it, the booking is actually made in economy with a space-available upgrade code.
  • Before booking business class, check that the flight has a business cabin. Domestic and some short-haul flights are economy only, and the system will let you book business class anyway.
  • British Airways employees: downgrade refunds don't apply under the reciprocal agreement.
  • Paid seat selection isn't available.

Special services, children and pets

  • You can't choose a meal, such as vegetarian or allergy-free.
  • Lap-held infants can't currently be booked in myIDTravel on domestic New Zealand-only trips. International trips, and domestic journeys that include an international leg, book normally.

If myIDTravel shows "Unknown Communication Error" or "Domestic bookings with infants not supported" at the Shopping Basket:

  1. Start the booking again without the infant.
  2. Any time up to 1 hour before the domestic flight departs, call Air NZ Reservations with your booking reference (PNR) and ask them to add the infant's name manually.

Dress code

Everyone on staff travel must dress to a high standard. As a guide, these aren't acceptable: tracksuits, frayed or patched jeans, singlet tops, jandals (flip flops), bare midriffs or bare feet. Smart casual shorts are fine, and dress jeans can be worn in the premium cabins.

If your agreement allows upper-cabin travel, upgrades need a higher standard still, such as business attire. Airport staff can refuse to load you, or refuse an upgrade, if they don't find your dress acceptable.

Changes and refunds

You can change only the date and/or time, and only in myIDTravel:

  1. Use the Rebook button. Don't use the Relist button (the cancel-and-relist option).
  2. If no radio button appears next to a flight, it isn't operated by Air NZ and can't be booked. Click the underlined flight number to see the details and the reason.

To change your route, first cancel and then refund the ticket (two separate steps), and make a new booking.

Refunds:

  • Full refunds are processed automatically, and the myIDTravel fee is refunded.
  • Partial refunds are handled manually and can take some time. The myIDTravel fee isn't refunded on partly used tickets.
  • If your airline's agreement with Air NZ includes refunds for class differences, downgrade refunds are handled by the refunds team: [email protected]
  • A ticket expires one year after the date of issue. After that it has no value and can't be reissued or refunded.
  • When you contact Air NZ Refunds, give your airline code, employee ID, name, booking reference(s) (PNR) and ticket number(s).

Good to know

  • Staff fares don't earn Air New Zealand Airpoints or status points.
  • Leaving from Nelson (NSN): on weekdays (Monday to Friday, except public holidays), payload restrictions limit standby chances on flights departing between 0800 and 1700 NZT if you have checked bags. At those times, travel with cabin baggage only or buy a commercial fare at www.airnewzealand.com.
