Finnair staff travel & standby
Listing is mandatory on every Finnair flight: tickets issued by Finnair in myIDTravel (starting 105) are listed automatically, other tickets must be listed in myIDTravel. Through check-in isn't available on standby, and on some long-haul routes, especially to Asia, you should carry a back-up ticket. Staff Airlines shows estimated open seats on Finnair flights before you go.

How to list for standby on Finnair
Every Finnair flight requires a listing.
- Ticket issued by Finnair in myIDTravel (number starts with 105): your flight is listed when you buy the ticket.
- Ticket issued by your own airline (number doesn't start with 105): list at https://www.myidtravel.com/myidlisting/ and have your ticket numbers ready.
When booking:
- Finnair strongly suggests one-way tickets, which are easier to handle if you change, cancel or refund.
- Only one listing per flight: you can't book both Economy and Business or Premium Economy on the same flight, or hold a paid ticket and an ID ticket for the same flight.
- Buy all the tickets you and your eligible nominees are likely to need through your own airline's staff travel tools. Finnair doesn't issue rebate tickets to other airlines' employees.
If you can't log in, contact your own airline's Staff Travel department.
Flights you can't use
You can use AY-marketed scheduled flights operated by Finnair, Nordic Regional Airlines or a Finnair wet-lease partner. Excluded are all AY codeshare flights, AY charters and AY bus services.
Embargoes:
- Routes from Helsinki (HEL) to Kajaani (KAJ), Joensuu (JOE), Jyväskylä (JYV), Kokkola (KOK) and Kemi (KEM) are embargoed for ID leisure travel, both standby (R2) and confirmed (R1). These are Public Service Obligation (PSO) routes tendered by the Finnish authority Traficom and run until 27 February 2028. They remain bookable for duty travel (S1) and deadheading crew (C1).
- The Helsinki (HEL) – Melbourne (MEL) flight stops in Bangkok and can't be booked as one direct flight: it shows as embargoed. Use the multi-leg option in myIDTravel and book HEL-BKK plus BKK-MEL, or MEL-BKK plus BKK-HEL. This way you don't lose the second leg if you are offloaded in BKK.
Visas and travel documents
On a flight with one or more stops, you may be asked to give your seat to a paying passenger. Carry valid documents, passport, visa, vaccinations, for every country where the flight stops. Any fine Finnair receives because you don't comply is charged back to you.
Baggage
- Checked bags: the number of pieces is on your ticket. Size and other rules are the same as for paying passengers: finnair.com
- Where an airport has self-service Bag Drop, you must use it. Current list: finnair.com
- Cabin: 1 carry-on bag plus 1 small bag or personal item that fits under the seat in front. Weight and size limits: finnair.com
- If you go over the allowance in pieces, size or weight, your bag may be checked at the gate and you may have to pay.
Check-in
- Ticket issued by Finnair in myIDTravel (starts with 105): check in online at https://www.finnair.com/fi-en/check-in or in the Finnair app. Online check-in generally opens 36/24 hours before the flight and closes at the minimum check-in time. Self-service kiosks can also be used where available. Some destinations, such as DEL, also require you to see the check-in desk for instructions before entering the departure hall.
- Ticket issued by your own airline (doesn't start with 105): online check-in isn't available; check in at the Economy desk.
- Check in for only one flight at a time. For example, don't check in for both HEL-HND and HEL-NRT leaving around the same time: it adds work at the gate, can delay the flight and can cost another ID passenger a seat.
- Finish check-in within the recommended times on finnair.com. If you check in late, you will be refused.
Through check-in isn't available on standby. At each connection leave enough time to land, pass border control, collect your bags, clear customs and check in again.
Boarding, seats and upgrades
- Be at the gate no later than the boarding time on your boarding pass.
- If your boarding pass shows a seat, go straight to the plane. If not, wait at the gate until the gate agent calls you. The Finnair app shows seat assignment updates, so using it is recommended.
- You must fly on the same flight as your checked bags. Once seats are assigned, you and your travel party can't refuse to board, except in an emergency.
- Even with a seat from online check-in or the airport counter, you can still be offloaded at the gate because of weight limits, last-minute bookings, rerouted passengers or operational reasons. A preliminary seat isn't a binding agreement to carry you.
- You can't reserve a specific seat in advance.
- Upgrades are given only in exceptional cases. Don't ask Finnair staff for one.
- Staff tickets don't give access to Finnair lounges, even confirmed Business duty or deadhead crew tickets. If you hold a Finnair Plus tier card or a oneworld Emerald or Sapphire card, you can use lounges under that card's conditions.
Special services, children and pets
- In exceptional cases, such as many last-minute bookings or catering problems, standby passengers may not get a full meal, because paying passengers come first.
- Special meals aren't available on standby. If you have dietary needs, bring your own food.
- Infant safety seats aren't provided to staff travellers.
- Children under 16 can travel on a standby ticket only with an adult holding a similar discounted ticket.
Dress code
Dress in good taste in every cabin; if you don't, you can be refused. Sportswear, shorts, beachwear, tracksuits, windcheaters and similar very casual clothes aren't accepted on board.
Waiting at the gate can be stressful, but behave properly and tactfully so you don't disturb other passengers or inconvenience ground staff and cabin crew. Inappropriate behaviour on board, at the airport or in contact with Finnair's ID travel team won't be tolerated and can lead to offloading, a travel ban, or both.
Changes and refunds
- All refunds, full or partial, go through myIDTravel.
- Downgrade refunds (Business to Premium Economy, Business to Economy, Premium Economy to Economy) are also requested in myIDTravel, but only if your airline has a reciprocal agreement on this with Finnair.
- Don't use a credit card chargeback to get money back for a rebate ticket. If you do, Finnair will claim the payment back from your employing airline under article C.2.f of the ZEDMIBA agreement.
Good to know
Weight-restricted flights: on some long-haul flights, especially Asia routes, the number of ID passengers can be limited. Carry a back-up ticket.
Triangle, tag and 5th freedom flights: on routes with an intermediate stop (for example ALF-KTT-HEL) you can sometimes be offloaded at the midpoint, for instance because of last-minute bookings or technical reasons. Be ready to buy a back-up ticket (for example KTT-HEL) to continue. The original ticket isn't refunded, because as a through flight it counts as flown. Finnair's tag routes are HEL-KTT-ALF, HEL-TKU-ARN, HEL-ARN-BGO, HEL-ARN-SVG, HEL-IVL-KKN, HEL-RVN-TOS, HEL-VAA-UME and HEL-TMP-OUL.
Compensation: apart from refunds for unflown segments, you aren't entitled to compensation for delays, cancellations or not being carried, even if paying passengers on the same flight get it. EU regulation 261/2004 doesn't apply to ID travel (article 3, paragraph 3), so don't file claims for delays, missed connections or cancellations: they will be rejected. Your rights for mishandled baggage, injury or property damage under the Montreal Convention of 1999 and other applicable conventions aren't affected. By booking Finnair, you accept these terms.
Insurance: Finnair strongly recommends comprehensive insurance. It can't make free special arrangements if you are injured or fall ill while away, or lose money, documents or belongings.
Privacy: to get a copy of the Privacy Policy on how your ID ticket data is processed, email [email protected].

Questions, answered
Do I need to list in myIDTravel for a Finnair standby flight?
Yes, on every Finnair flight. Tickets issued by Finnair in myIDTravel (starting 105) are listed automatically; other tickets must be listed at myIDTravel.
Can I check my bags through to a connecting flight?
Not on standby. Leave time at each connection to pass border control, collect your bags, clear customs and check in again.
Can I check in online for a Finnair standby flight?
Only with a Finnair-issued ticket (starting 105), on finnair.com or in the Finnair app. With a ticket issued by your own airline, check in at the Economy desk.
What can't I wear on Finnair as a staff traveler?
Sportswear, shorts, beachwear, tracksuits, windcheaters and similar very casual clothes.
Can I use the Finnair lounge on a staff ticket?
No, not even on a confirmed Business duty ticket. Only a Finnair Plus tier or oneworld Emerald or Sapphire card gives access, under that card's conditions.
Which airlines can I fly on ZED fares?
It depends on the ZED and interline agreements of the airline you work for. In Staff Airlines, the partner airlines filter shows only the flights you can board.
Airline rules change often and this summary may be out of date. Always confirm important details with Finnair’s staff travel department or in the booking tool you use before you travel.
