How to list for standby on Malaysia Airlines
Every space-available (standby or subload) trip needs a listing, and passengers without one are refused travel. Make the flight and meal listing at least 48 hours before an international flight and 24 hours before a domestic flight.
- E-ticket bought in myIDtravel with a number beginning 232 (Malaysia Airlines ticket stock): you are listed automatically when the ticket is issued, so nothing else is needed.
- Any other e-ticket: make a meal listing at the nearest Malaysia Airlines office or through the call centre (1300 88 3000 within Malaysia, +603-7843 3000 from outside Malaysia).
Flights you can't use
- Codeshare flights not operated by Malaysia Airlines.
- Flight numbers in the 3000–3999, 4000–4999, 5200–5999 and 6000–6999 ranges, and 9000-series flights.
There are no embargoes.
Visas and travel documents
On international trips you need a valid passport and the right visas for your destination and for every scheduled stop on the way, in case you have to be offloaded. Some countries require Advance Passenger Information (APIS) and an Electronic Travel Authority (ETAS), and Malaysia Airlines needs these before check-in.
Malaysia Airlines can deny boarding to anyone without the right documents for every transit point on the route.
Baggage
- Checked: 20 kg on domestic sectors, 30 kg on international sectors.
- Excess baggage is charged by weight in all regions.
- Cabin: one bag per passenger, up to 7 kg and 56 × 36 × 23 cm, that fits in the overhead bin or under the seat. You can also bring one personal item, such as a handbag, briefcase or laptop.
- Travelling with an infant: one bag of up to 115 cm in total dimensions, which can go in the cabin, plus one fully collapsible pushchair, stroller or carrying basket. Together these items can weigh no more than 10 kg.
Check-in
Finish check-in no later than 60 minutes before the scheduled departure, to allow for extra security procedures.
- Go to the dedicated staff check-in counter.
- Show all your valid personal ID to the agent.
- If seats are available, the agent checks you in.
- Go straight to the gate for boarding.
Through check-in isn't available on standby. Leave yourself enough time at every stop to land and check in again.
Boarding, seats and upgrades
- At the gate you must show ID so your identity can be checked. If you can't, or it doesn't match, you will be denied boarding.
- You can ask for a seat at check-in, depending on availability. A seat given to you can still be changed if paying passengers need it.
- Upgrades aren't available.
Special services, children and pets
- Special meals can't be pre-booked on rebate tickets.
- Unaccompanied minors aren't accepted on standby or ZED tickets.
Dress code
Malaysia Airlines applies a dress code to all rebate passengers, and you must dress for the cabin you are eligible for.
Acceptable: a collared T-shirt, long trousers or jeans, and shoes.
Not acceptable:
- Anything that shows your midriff or underwear, sleepwear or swimwear.

Good to know
- Tickets can't be used out of sequence, and Malaysia Airlines won't accept claims for problems this causes. Buy one-way coupons to avoid issues.
