How to list for standby on Hong Kong Airlines

Tickets issued or rescheduled in myIDTravel get a listing automatically. Listing is recommended but not mandatory: tickets without a listing are accepted. When you buy a ticket in myIDTravel you get an automated email with no e-ticket image attached. You can't retrieve your standby ticket on the Hong Kong Airlines website.

To issue your ticket:

  1. Use myIDTravel and choose "one-way" only. Round-trip or multi-leg bookings may give an error at the final payment step.
  2. Make sure the name on the ticket matches your travel documents exactly.
  3. Don't pay with a pre-paid credit card: Hong Kong Airlines can't receive the payment.

If you're eligible for business class, check that the flight has it: select the flight, tap "Show details" and then "Flight Details". If the seats shown include C#, D#, J# or Z#, the flight has a business class cabin. On a flight without business class you won't get a business class quote.

Don't use a chargeback or credit card dispute to get your money back. Hong Kong Airlines Limited may dispute an illegitimate chargeback and charge the extra chargeback fees to the cardholder.

Flights you can't use

Excluded:

  • HX flights not operated by HX aircraft.
  • Joint venture flights.
  • Codeshare flights.

Embargoed: flights between HKG and DAT, DNH, HLD, XNN, VTE, ROR and SPN, in both directions.

Visas and travel documents

You need a valid ticket and the right travel documents, including visas or entry permits where required, for every country you travel to or through, unless that country's authorities have granted an exemption.

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months.
  • Visas and entry permits must be valid for your stay or longer, depending on the country.
  • If you don't meet these requirements, you may have problems at check-in and be refused entry.

Baggage

Hong Kong Airlines Limited isn't liable for lost, damaged or delayed baggage of non-revenue travellers.

Free checked baggage on ID tickets:

  • Economy: adults and children up to 2 pieces of 23 kg each; infants 1 piece of 10 kg.
  • Business: adults and children up to 2 pieces of 32 kg each; infants 1 piece of 10 kg.
  • You can't pre-pay extra baggage online on an ID ticket.
  • Oversized, excess and overweight bags are charged at the standard airport counter rates.
  • Your hand baggage allowance is the same as for paying passengers. For the latest rules, see hongkongairlines.com

Check-in

ID tickets have no online check-in and no transit desk check-in, and bags can't be checked through to a connection.

  1. Be at the Hong Kong Airlines check-in counter, on the departure level, 120 minutes before scheduled departure.
  2. At HKG, go to the "Staff Standby" counter, the last counter, and register your standby request there. In other cities there's no staff standby counter: queue like other passengers and tell the agent you're on a staff standby ticket.

From 27 May 2026, check-in counters for Hong Kong Airlines flights originally scheduled to depart after 0400 move from Terminal 1 to the new Terminal 2, Aisle Q.

At HKG, the check-in counter closes 60 minutes before departure. Closing times in other cities are at hongkongairlines.com

Boarding, seats and upgrades

Once you're accepted, be at the boarding gate at least 30 minutes before departure. The upgrade policy for ID passengers is listed as "nil".

Special services, children and pets

  • Meals aren't guaranteed for ID passengers, and special meals aren't available to any standby passenger. If you have dietary needs, bring your own food on board.
  • Under-16s on ID tickets must travel with an adult on the same type of ticket. A child or infant on an ID ticket can't travel with an adult on a commercial ticket, and the other way round.
  • An infant ticket is issued without a seat. It must be bought together with an adult ticket and used on the same flight as the adult.
  • For operational reasons, infants aren't accepted in business class on HKG–YVR and YVR–HKG, on any aircraft, or on any route flown by the A33G aircraft type.

Dress code

Dress in line with public standards of good taste, which normally means office wear or smart casual. Sweatshirts, shorts, gym shoes and similar very casual clothes aren't acceptable. Airport Services staff enforce the dress code and have the final say, and if your clothes aren't acceptable you won't be accepted for boarding.

Changes and refunds

  • Reschedule in myIDTravel before the original departure time. Once the original flight has left, the ticket can't be rescheduled.
  • If you haven't chosen a new date yet, move the ticket to a later date.
  • You can't reschedule a segment after you've cancelled it.
  • Buy all the tickets you're likely to need from your own airline. Hong Kong Airlines doesn't issue rebate tickets to interline ID passengers.
