KLM accepts only electronic ZED tickets, and every listing on an IET ticket is made through MyIDListing. On multi-stop KLM routes you may need separate tickets for each leg bought before you set off, because KLM offices won't issue standby tickets during your trip. Staff Airlines shows estimated open seats on KLM flights before you go.

How to list for standby on KLM

  • KLM accepts only electronic ZED tickets on its flights (since January 1st 2013). Interline agreements with airlines that can't issue e-tickets have been suspended.
  • Make all listings on KLM flights with IET tickets through MyIDListing. Your airline's staff travel department has the details of how to do it.
  • If your itinerary changes, cancel the listing for the KLM flights affected.
  • Be ready to show a printed copy of your e-ticket and listing at check-in.

Visas and travel documents

Always carry all the correct travel documents.

Some KLM destinations have very strict visa rules (for example KWI, DMM, ABV, KAN, KRT, EBB, KGL), and these affect which ISA tickets you need. Check www.cibt.nl for the latest visa requirements. On these routes, request these coupons (the stop with the visa restriction is in brackets):

  • Muscat (MCT), KL421 & KL422, AMS-DMM-MCT-DMM-AMS (DMM): AMS-MCT, MCT-AMS
  • Bahrain (BAH), KL445 & KL446, AMS-KWI-BAH-KWI-AMS (KWI): AMS-BAH, BAH-AMS
  • Entebbe (EBB), KL535/KL537/KL539, AMS-KGL-EBB-AMS (KGL): AMS-EBB, EBB-AMS
  • Kigali (KGL), KL535/KL537/KL539, AMS-KGL-EBB-AMS (EBB): AMS-KGL, KGL-AMS
  • Kilimanjaro (JRO), KL567/KL569/KL571, AMS-JRO-DAR-AMS (DAR): AMS-JRO, JRO-AMS
  • Dar es Salaam (DAR), KL567/KL569/KL571, AMS-JRO-DAR-AMS (JRO): AMS-DAR, DAR-AMS

If your final destination is KWI (via DMM), DMM (via KWI), EBB (via KGL) or KGL (via EBB), KLM ground staff in Amsterdam will accept you only if it's guaranteed you can stay on board to your final destination. Visa rules there don't allow KLM to offload passengers at the intermediate stop.

Baggage

  • Checked: 1 piece of up to 23 kg. Infants: 1 piece of up to 10 kg.
  • Cabin: 1 piece, up to L55cm x W25cm x H35cm and 12 kg.
  • Any extra baggage is charged under the commercial excess baggage policy.

Check-in

Check-in and bag drop deadlines are on www.klm.com. Check in at the Self Service Check-In (SSCI) machines at the airport, and if that doesn't work, see a check-in agent. Always be at the gate on time.

Boarding, seats and upgrades

ZED passengers, including KLM's own staff, board by PSN number (Priority Serial Number) in this order:

  1. KLM staff on ZED tickets
  2. AF staff
  3. Staff of SkyTeam members
  4. Staff of all other airlines
  • Crew rest seats aren't given to staff of other airlines on ZED tickets.
  • If tourist class is overbooked, staff of all ZED partners may be offered an upgrade.

Special services, children and pets

Airline staff on standby can't request special services, special meals or seats, and unaccompanied minors aren't accepted.

Dress code

Dress neatly and take care of your appearance: neat casual (business) clothes. Track or sweat suits, tank tops, flip-flops, shorts and torn or extravagant clothing aren't allowed. Neat, tidy jeans are fine. You can't travel in airline uniform on KLM. If you don't follow the dress code, you can be refused travel.

Changes and refunds

KLM's local ticket offices never issue extra or new standby tickets to staff of ZED partners, and you can't ask for ISA tickets at airports or KLM offices during an ISA journey. Carry enough back-up tickets so you don't have to buy expensive commercial ones.

Good to know

Multi-stop routes and split tickets

Some KLM flights call at several destinations in a row: tail-end flights (for example AMS-KUL-JKT) and circle flights (for example AMS-SXM-CUR-AMS). Strict rules decide which ISA (If Seats Available) tickets you need for them, and on some of these routes you must buy separate ISA tickets for each leg before the outbound flight. That way, if you're offloaded at an intermediate stop, for example to make room for paying passengers, you already hold the tickets to continue.

Routes where split tickets are compulsory, with the coupons to request (* marks a stop with offload risk):

  • Denpasar (DPS), KL835/KL836, AMS-SIN*-DPS-SIN*-AMS: AMS-SIN, SIN-DPS, DPS-SIN, SIN-AMS
  • Jakarta (CGK), KL809/KL810, AMS-KUL*-CGK-KUL*-AMS: AMS-KUL, KUL-CGK, CGK-KUL, KUL-AMS
  • Santiago de Chile (SCL), KL701/KL702, AMS-EZE*-SCL-EZE*-AMS: AMS-EZE, EZE-SCL, SCL-EZE, EZE-AMS
  • Freetown (FNA) and Monrovia (ROB), KL511, AMS-FNA*-ROB*-AMS: AMS-FNA-ROB-AMS

On some legs KLM has no commercial traffic rights and legally can't issue ISA tickets, so after an offload you may have to buy extra commercial or ISA tickets. Routes affected, with the leg without traffic rights in brackets and the coupons to request (* marks a stop with offload risk):

  • Aruba (AUA), KL765/KL767/KL769, AMS-AUA-BON*-AMS (AUA-BON): AMS-AUA, AUA-AMS
  • Bogota (BOG), KL741/KL749, AMS-BOG-CTG*-AMS (BOG-CTG): AMS-BOG, BOG-AMS
  • Bonaire (BON), KL765/KL767/KL769, AMS-AUA*-BON-AMS (AUA-BON): AMS-BON, BON-AMS
  • Cartagena (CTG), KL741/KL749, AMS-BOG*-CTG-AMS (BOG-CTG): AMS-CTG, CTG-AMS
  • Curacao (CUR), KL789, AMS-SXM*-CUR-AMS (SXM-CUR): AMS-CUR, CUR-AMS
  • Dar es Salaam (DAR), KL567/KL569/KL571, AMS-JRO*-DAR-AMS (JRO-DAR): AMS-DAR, DAR-AMS
  • Entebbe (EBB), KL535/KL537/KL539, AMS-KGL*-EBB-AMS (KGL-EBB): AMS-EBB, EBB-AMS
  • Guayaquil (GYE), KL751/KL753/KL755, AMS-UIO*-GYE-AMS (UIO-GYE): AMS-GYE, GYE-AMS
  • Kigali (KGL), KL535/KL537/KL539, AMS-KGL-EBB*-AMS (KGL-EBB): AMS-KGL, KGL-AMS
  • Kilimanjaro (JRO), KL567/KL569/KL571, AMS-JRO-DAR*-AMS (JRO-DAR): AMS-JRO, JRO-AMS
  • Liberia (LIR), KL717/KL719, AMS-SJO*-LIR-AMS (SJO-LIR): AMS-LIR, LIR-AMS
  • Manila (MNL), KL807/KL808, AMS-TPE*-MNL & MNL-TPE*-AMS (TPE-MNL & MNL-TPE): AMS-MNL, MNL-AMS
  • Quito (UIO), KL751/KL753/KL755, AMS-UIO-GYE*-AMS (UIO-GYE): AMS-UIO, UIO-AMS
  • San Jose (SJO), KL717/KL719, AMS-SJO-LIR*-AMS (SJO-LIR): AMS-SJO, SJO-AMS
  • Sint Maarten (SXM), KL789, AMS-SXM-CUR*-AMS (SXM-CUR): AMS-SXM, SXM-AMS
  • Windhoek (WDH), KL575 & KL576, AMS-LAD*-WDH & WDH-LAD*-AMS (LAD-WDH & WDH-LAD): AMS-WDH, WDH-AMS

If you're offloaded or stranded, buying the tickets to reach your destination is up to you:

  • Example: you fly from Amsterdam to Curacao but are offloaded on Sint Maarten. With no traffic rights on SXM-CUR, you'd have to buy a commercial SXM-CUR ticket. The same can happen on JRO-DAR, SXM-BON and AUA-CUR.
  • Example: on Aruba you are accepted to Amsterdam on an AUA-AMS coupon, but you're offloaded on Bonaire. You'd then need a BON-AMS ISA ticket, so buy it in advance.

Holding the right ISA tickets for your whole journey is always your responsibility.

Through MyIDListing, on an electronic ZED (IET) ticket. Your staff travel department has the details, and you should carry a printed copy of your e-ticket and listing.

How much baggage can I take on KLM as a staff traveler?

One checked bag up to 23 kg (10 kg for infants) and one cabin bag up to L55cm x W25cm x H35cm and 12 kg.

Can I wear jeans on KLM?

Yes, if they are neat and tidy. Track suits, tank tops, flip-flops, shorts and torn or extravagant clothing aren't allowed, and neither is airline uniform.

Can I get a ticket from KLM if I'm offloaded halfway?

No. KLM offices don't issue standby tickets to partner staff, so buy the ISA tickets for every leg in advance.

Who boards first on KLM standby?

KLM staff on ZED tickets, then AF staff, then SkyTeam staff, then staff of all other airlines, by Priority Serial Number.

Which airlines can I fly on ZED fares?

It depends on the ZED and interline agreements of the airline you work for. In Staff Airlines, the partner airlines filter shows only the flights you can board.

Airline rules change often and this summary may be out of date. Always confirm important details with KLM’s staff travel department or in the booking tool you use before you travel. Staff Airlines is not responsible for denied boarding, missed flights or other losses. Found a mistake? Let us know.
