How to list for standby on Qantas

A listing is required for all Qantas and Jetstar flights, and you may be refused travel without one.

Qantas flights:

  • If you bought your e-ticket in myIDTravel and it was issued by Qantas (081 ticket stock), it is listed automatically when you book.
  • If your e-ticket was issued by your own airline (not 081 stock), or you bought it directly from your airline, you have to list yourself at https://www.myidtravel.com/myidlisting/
  • No myIDTravel login for your airline? Ask your staff travel office for the user ID and password.
  • If listing in myIDTravel doesn't work, first check that your e-tickets were issued correctly. If it still fails and you are travelling soon, email [email protected] or call +61 1300 303 411 (option 1). Give the passenger names, your airline, the e-ticket numbers, and the flight and date.

Jetstar flights:

  • Bookings made in myIDTravel and issued by Jetstar or Jetstar Japan are listed automatically when you book.
  • To change a Jetstar or Jetstar Japan listing, contact Jetstar between 0600 and 2030 Australian Eastern Standard Time.

Flights you can't use

You can't use QF flight numbers that aren't flown by Qantas or Jetstar aircraft, that is, codeshare services. There are no embargoes at the moment.

Baggage

  • In Economy you get the normal commercial Qantas Economy allowance; full details are on qantas.com.
  • In Business the allowance is 40 kg.
  • No single checked bag can be heavier than 32 kg (70 lb).
  • All cabin bags, musical instruments included, must fit under the seat in front of you or in an overhead locker.
  • Qantas may refuse a bag that isn't packed properly and securely, even if it is within the limits.
  • On Jetstar and Jetstar Japan the checked allowance is 20 kg. You can buy extra baggage through the Jetstar Tradeline; have your booking details ready.
  • If you go over the allowance, you pay the excess baggage charges.

Check-in

The Qantas App is the preferred way for staff travellers to check in. Add your booking with "Add Trip". Qantas flight loads show in the app within 72 hours of departure. You can also check in through Manage Booking on www.qantas.com, but loads aren't shown there.

Online check-in timing:

  • Australian domestic and Trans-Tasman flights: check in online within 2 hours of departure.
  • Other international flights: check in online within 4 hours of departure.
  • If you check in earlier than this, you are checked in as standby and need to refresh the app to see whether you've been given a seat.

If you can't check in online, check in at the airport:

  • Sydney T1 (International): Qantas flights QF1–QF399, at the Economy check-in desks.
  • Sydney T2 (Jetstar Domestic): Jetstar domestic flights.
  • Sydney T3 (Qantas Domestic): Qantas domestic flights QF400–QF1599 and QantasLink flights 1600 and above. Use a check-in kiosk and follow the on-screen steps.
  • Other Australian airports: use a self check-in kiosk for domestic flights, or the Economy counters where there are no kiosks.
  • International airports: use a self check-in kiosk where there is one (not every airport has them), otherwise the Economy desks.

Through check-in isn't available on standby (space available, subload or ID) tickets. Leave enough time to land and check in again at every connection, and make sure you carry the right documents.

Boarding, seats and upgrades

Qantas has Economy and Business cabins.

  • You can't request a seat, on duty or personal travel. If the flight is open, the check-in agent may offer you an aisle or window, depending on the commercial load.
  • Even with a seat assigned at check-in, you can be moved, including after you board, if commercial needs require it.
  • Upgrades are handled at the airport when you hold a Business Class ticket.

Special services, children and pets

  • Special meals aren't available to any rebate passenger, on duty or personal travel. If you have dietary needs or won't eat what is likely to be served, bring your own food and drink.
  • Children under 16 can't travel on any staff travel rebate ticket unless an adult on the same type of rebate ticket travels with them.

Dress code

Keep a high standard of dress and grooming: neat, clean and conservative. These rules apply when you board and when you get off. If you don't meet them you may be refused boarding or an upgrade; local airport management makes the final call.

  • Downgrade refunds are manual and can take up to 4 weeks. Email your boarding pass, booking reference, ticket number and passenger details to [email protected].
  • Not every airline with a Business Class agreement can claim downgrade refunds; your staff travel department can tell you if yours can.

Good to know

Qantas strongly recommends comprehensive travel insurance. It can't offer free special arrangements if you get injured or ill while away, or lose money, documents or belongings.

How to fly standby on Qantas

  1. Check loads early

The Qantas App shows loads only within 72 hours of departure. Staff Airlines shows estimated open seats earlier, so you can pick a flight in time and make sure your listing is in place.

  2. Plan a backup through Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane

If your flight fills up, look at other Qantas or Jetstar flights the same day, or a routing through Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. Through check-in isn't available on standby, so allow time to check in again at each stop.

  3. Ask an agent before you go

Before you leave for the airport, ask an agent in Staff Airlines to check your flight. Agents are airline staff who can see flight loads: when one answers, you see open seats by cabin as they are right now. Requests use tokens; Premium includes them.

  4. On the day

Check in online within 2 hours of departure on Australian domestic and Trans-Tasman flights, and within 4 hours on other international flights. With Premium, subscribe to the flight in Staff Airlines for regular status updates.
