SWISS staff travel & standby

IATA LXICAO SWRSwitzerland ›

To fly standby on SWISS you must list or book, in myIDTravel for myIDTravel (NIET) tickets, and you may list for one flight only. Check loads yourself in myIDTravel, because SWISS call centers and ticket offices won't answer load questions. Codeshare flights LX 3000–4999, trains and buses LX 7400–7899 and flights LX 9000–9999 can't be used. Staff Airlines shows estimated open seats on SWISS flights before you go.

Check loads in the appFree on iPhone and Android.

How to list for standby on SWISS

A listing or booking is mandatory on both myIDTravel (NIET) and IET tickets, whichever airline you work for.

  • List for one flight only. Backup listings on several flights or in several classes aren't allowed.
  • Check loads and availability yourself in myIDTravel. Don't contact SWISS call centers or Airport Ticket Offices (ATO) about loads: SWISS doesn't answer questions about loads or bookings.
  • Waitlisted bookings on Edelweiss flights (WK/LX8xxx) don't get confirmed automatically. Keep checking availability and loads, and rebook online if you need to.

myIDTravel tickets (NIET):

  • myIDTravel is self-service. Create, change, rebook and cancel your booking only there: not on swiss.com or flyedelweiss.com.
  • Log in through your company's own myIDTravel link.
  • You can list or book up to 90 days before departure (not counting the travel date), unless something else has been agreed.
  • The booking confirmation comes to your email.
  • Your employer manages who can travel with you as a travel partner or companion.

IET tickets:

  • The confirmation of your LX listing comes to your email.
  • If you have an open IET ticket and need an LX listing, write to [email protected] to have the ticket revalidated.
  • Write to [email protected] only if you have a technical problem listing for or cancelling an LX flight.

SN and LY staff with ID00R2/B2/ID90R2 tickets under Neighbourhood Agreements: tickets issued on a code other than LX (for example ID00R2/N2) can't be listed in myIDTravel. Send your listing request to [email protected]

Flights you can't use

  • LX 3000–4999 (codeshare flights).
  • LX 7400–7899 (trains and buses).
  • LX 9000–9999.

Some flights are operated for SWISS by partner airlines under wet-lease agreements. Flights LX 001–2999 and LX 8000–8999 operated by Austrian Airlines (OS), Edelweiss Air (WK), Helvetic Airways (2L) and airBaltic (BT) count as SWISS flights, not codeshares, and can be used on ZED and MIBA tickets. On LX8xxx flights operated by Edelweiss Air (WK), you must carry a printed paper e-ticket itinerary/receipt: you may be asked for it during the trip.

Visas and travel documents

Getting your passport, visas and vaccination certificates, and making sure they are valid before you leave, is your responsibility. SWISS accepts no responsibility for missing, invalid or incomplete documents, and any fines or costs SWISS faces because of them are charged to you. Entry and transit rules can change at short notice, so check them before every trip: the SWISS Travel regulations page and the travel briefing, travel preparation (SWISS) and travel information (Edelweiss Air) pages on swiss.com and flyedelweiss.com can help.

  • USA: eligible travelers need an approved ESTA and completed Advance Passenger Information (API).
  • India: a valid visa is generally required, including for some transits.
  • South Africa: travelers under 18 may need extra documents when flying to or from South Africa.
  • Canada: citizens of visa-exempt countries need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before flying to or through Canada. Some exceptions apply, including for U.S. citizens.
  • United Kingdom: special entry rules apply, and nationals of some countries may need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

Baggage

Under the ZED Baggage Agreement, SWISS (LX) and Edelweiss Air (WK) give ID travelers this free checked allowance:

  • Economy: 1 piece up to 23 kg (50 lb).
  • Premium Economy: 2 pieces up to 23 kg (50 lb) each.
  • Business: 2 pieces up to 32 kg (70 lb) each.

Your bags are always carried only if there is space and the flight's weight limits allow it. Anything above the allowance is charged at the standard excess baggage rates for paying passengers, in full. Some items are restricted or banned altogether: check the baggage and dangerous goods rules on www.swiss.com or flyedelweiss.com before you travel.

  • Under international security rules, you can't carry bags, packages, documents or other items for anyone else.
  • Cabin baggage: one piece, in line with international standards or the allowance of your SWISS booking class. It must stay within the size and weight limits and be light enough for you to lift into the overhead bin on your own. The latest rules are on www.swiss.com.
  • Sports equipment: most of it fits into the free allowance at no extra cost. If you go over the number of pieces, size or weight, you pay at the airport. Details on swiss.com or flyedelweiss.com.
  • Bicycles: carried only if there is capacity. For advance information or help, contact [email protected].

Check-in

  • Check-in procedures and deadlines differ by airport: see www.swiss.com.
  • Online check-in is open to both firm and standby ID travelers, starting 23 hours before departure.
  • Unless told otherwise, finish check-in at least 60 minutes before departure.
  • You can use self-service kiosks once your listing or booking is done.
  • Mobile check-in works for tickets issued through myIDTravel.

Flights to the USA:

  • On top of the checks on electronic devices, you may be briefly interviewed or have your documents checked at check-in or at the gate.
  • SWISS Economy passengers flying from Geneva must check in at least 90 minutes before departure. Business class check-in times don't change.
  • From Zurich, SWISS recommends being at the airport at least 3 hours before departure.
  • Checking in online the evening before is recommended, and you should get to the airport in good time.

Through check-in:

  • It is generally available on firm ZED and MIBA tickets, but may not be available on standby (space available) tickets.
  • It isn't available for some itineraries because of technical, immigration or customs requirements: connections via the USA, India or GRU/GIG (São Paulo/Rio de Janeiro), and trips including Bangkok Airways (PG) flights.
  • Where customs or immigration rules require it, collect your bags at the first airport of entry and check them in again, whether the next flight is domestic or international.
  • India: standby and firm-booked transit passengers should keep their passport, paper ticket and boarding pass with them at all times, as they may have to leave and re-enter the terminal during the transfer.
  • Other restrictions or local procedures may apply, so allow enough time at each stop in case you have to check in again.
  • On trips starting outside Switzerland, bags often can't be checked through on separate tickets for technical reasons. Allow at least two extra hours for the connection.

Boarding, seats and upgrades

Standby priority codes:

  • STAR: LX77
  • MIBA: LX78
  • ZED: LX87
  • No listing: LX92

Confirmed (firm) bookings have higher priority. If a firm booking is waitlisted, the standby priorities above apply.

Special services, children and pets

ID travelers aren't entitled to special services or extra benefits. Requests for seat reservations, lounge access, special meals, extra baggage allowance and similar services depend on availability and the airline's decision, and may be turned down.

  • Special meals can't be pre-ordered on ID tickets.
  • Advance seat reservations aren't available on ID tickets.
  • Children under 16 can travel on a rebate ticket only with an adult on the same type of rebate ticket.
  • The unaccompanied minor service (UMNR) is available for 16- and 17-year-olds on firm-booked ID tickets, not on standby.
  • Wheelchair assistance can be arranged: contact [email protected] before you travel.

Blind and deaf ID travelers:

  1. A deaf traveler on their own can fly standby or firm-booked.
  2. A deaf or blind traveler with a hearing or guide dog can fly on a firm booking. On a standby ticket, boarding may be refused.
  3. A traveler who is both blind and deaf, with or without a dog, can fly only on a firm booking.

In these cases, email the medical assistance request to [email protected] at least one week before departure. Without this notice, SWISS may refuse travel.

Pet in the cabin (PETC):

  • Bring your own soft-sided carrier, no larger than 55 × 40 × 23 cm (118 cm / 46 in in total). Pet and carrier together may weigh up to 8 kg (17 lbs), and the carrier must fit under the seat in front of you.
  • One carrier per passenger.
  • PETC depends on availability and load limits.
  • An excess baggage charge always applies, paid at the airport, however much hand baggage you have.
  • You are responsible for meeting all import, transit and entry rules and having the documents ready.
  • Register the pet in advance by writing to [email protected]. Full details and the check-in form are on www.swiss.com.
  • Extra restrictions may apply in some countries, including the USA and Canada. For dogs travelling to the USA, CDC import rules may limit PETC and AVIH bookings depending on the country of origin; this doesn't apply to cats. Check www.swiss.com for the latest.

Animals in the hold (AVIH): SWISS doesn't offer this to ID passengers travelling under agreements with other airlines.

Dress code

On SWISS and Edelweiss, every ID traveler must follow a dress code that fits the airline's quality image and the usual standard of the cabin. If you don't, you can be downgraded or refused travel. A smarter outfit and a well-groomed look may also help you get a seat in a higher class.

Casual clothes are fine, but they must be decent, neat, clean, well kept and not worn out, with nothing on them that could provoke or offend others. Your style and overall look matter more than designer labels.

  • No provocative prints.
  • Tops that cover your shoulders and midriff.
  • Smart long trousers.
  • Skirts and dresses at knee length or longer.
  • Closed-toe shoes.

By cabin:

  • Economy and Premium Economy: smart casual.
  • Business and First: casual business wear; a tie isn't needed.
  • First: no jeans.

Revealing, offensive or unsuitable clothing or appearance isn't accepted: for example beachwear, visible underwear, bra tops or provocative tattoos. Children must be dressed appropriately too. After take-off, changing into comfortable clothes that still follow these rules is allowed, but not pajamas.

Changes and refunds

If you aren't going to travel, always cancel before departure so you aren't marked as a no-show. Cancel with the same tool you used to book.

If you have already checked in for a SWISS flight and won't fly, check out before departure. This frees the seat for others and lets you change your booking or listing.

  1. Go to SWISS.com and open Check-in.
  2. Retrieve your booking with your booking reference (PNR) and last name.
  3. Open your check-in details.
  4. Scroll down and choose Check out / Cancel check-in.
  5. Confirm.

If your boarding pass is on your phone, you can also reach the check-in page from the booking and check out there.

Refunds on myIDTravel tickets:

  • Keep your boarding passes and travel documents until the trip is over and any refund has been paid. If there is a system problem, a refund can't be processed without proof of travel.
  • Unused tickets can be refunded online in myIDTravel within one month of the original travel date.
  • Don't ask your credit card provider for a chargeback. SWISS may dispute unjustified chargebacks and recover the fees from the cardholder.
  • Tickets not issued through myIDTravel are refunded at the place where they were issued.

Downgrade refunds (DG):

  • For SWISS and Edelweiss Air flights, request them in the SWISS online refund tool within 90 days of travel. The link and details are in myIDTravel > ID Agreements > SWISS.
  • No downgrade refund is given for travel on Aeromexico (AM), American Airlines (AA), Avianca (AV), Bangkok Airways (PG), British Airways (BA), Eurowings (EW), LOT Polish Airlines (LO) and Saudia (SV).
  • On United Airlines (UA), there is no downgrade refund from Business to Premium Economy.
  • Private jet operators (three-letter airline code) send downgrade refund requests to [email protected]

Payment problems:

  • Payment uses 3D Secure (Visa Verified, Mastercard SecureCode, Amex SafeKey or Diners ProtectBuy). It has been the European standard since 2019 for all cards issued by banks in the EEA and Switzerland. Usually it adds one simple step to confirm your identity; sometimes your bank doesn't require it. Your card must already be activated for 3D Secure: ask your bank if you aren't sure.
  • If the ticket can't be issued because of a payment error, the temporary booking (PNR) is cancelled automatically and you need to make a new one.
  • Your card issuer may block the fare amount for a while. Nothing is charged if no ticket was issued, and the block is lifted automatically after a few days.
  • Before you try again, make sure your card is activated for 3D Secure, your browser is supported and pop-ups are allowed. More in myIDTravel > ID Agreements.

Buenos Aires – São Paulo flights:

  • If you board standby in BUE (EZE) with little chance of continuing from SAO (GRU) and get offloaded in SAO, you will need a new SAO–ZRH ticket. SWISS recommends buying a separate ID standby backup ticket for BUE–SAO.
  • BUE lets standby passengers board because there are more ways to reach Europe on other airlines from SAO than from BUE.
  • If you are offloaded in SAO, the BUE–ZRH ID flight coupon isn't refunded afterwards.
  • If you are offloaded or downgraded in SAO on a BUE–SAO–ZRH ID ticket, the regular refund procedures apply.

Good to know

  • You can't earn or redeem miles on ID tickets, and frequent flyer benefits don't apply.
  • ID travelers on duty or private tickets don't get lounge access, in Economy or Business, even with a confirmed booking. You can buy access at the public price (no ID discount): vouchers for SWISS Lounges in Zurich (ZRH) and Geneva (GVA) on swiss.com (non-refundable), or Aspire Lounge access at Zurich Airport online for a fee.
  • On standby, ID tickets can be used out of sequence.
  • On LX flights operated by Edelweiss Air (WK), a printed paper e-ticket is mandatory. Print your e-ticket confirmation and keep it for the whole trip: especially for short-notice Edelweiss listings and for bookings confirmed from the waitlist less than 25 hours before departure.

Contacts:

  • [email protected]: only for technical problems booking, cancelling or getting a refund for an LX flight, for downgrade refunds that need manual processing (attach a copy of your boarding pass), or for other myIDTravel support. More on bookings, payments and refunds is in myIDTravel > ID Agreements.
  • [email protected]: all other ID travel questions.
  • Don't use the feedback form on swiss.com for ID travel.
  • Reimbursement claims for an ID trip, such as baggage expenses: write to [email protected] with your PNR, the receipts, your full postal address, IBAN, bank name, BIC/SWIFT code and a description of the claim.

Questions, answered

Do I need to list in myIDTravel for a SWISS standby flight?

Yes. A listing or booking is mandatory on myIDTravel (NIET) and IET tickets, and you may list for one flight only.

How can I check loads on a SWISS flight?

Only in myIDTravel. SWISS call centers and airport ticket offices don't answer questions about loads or bookings.

How much baggage can I take on SWISS as a staff traveler?

One 23 kg piece in Economy, two 23 kg pieces in Premium Economy and two 32 kg pieces in Business, if space and weight limits allow. In the cabin, one piece you can lift into the overhead bin yourself.

What should I wear on SWISS?

Smart casual in Economy and Premium Economy, casual business wear in Business and First (no jeans in First). Cover shoulders and midriff, wear long trousers or knee-length skirts and closed-toe shoes; ignoring the dress code can lead to a downgrade or refusal.

Can I check through to my connection on a SWISS standby ticket?

Through check-in is generally available on firm ZED and MIBA tickets but may not be on standby. It isn't available for connections via the USA, India or GRU/GIG, so allow time to check in again.

Which airlines can I fly on ZED fares?

It depends on the ZED and interline agreements of the airline you work for. In Staff Airlines, the partner airlines filter shows only the flights you can board.

Airline rules change often and this summary may be out of date. Always confirm important details with SWISS’s staff travel department or in the booking tool you use before you travel. Staff Airlines is not responsible for denied boarding, missed flights or other losses. Found a mistake? Let us know.
