Lufthansa staff travel & standby
To fly standby on Lufthansa you must list for your flight in myIDTravel: there is no other way to get on the standby list. Standby passengers can't book special services, and through check-in to a connection isn't always available, so plan extra time at each stop. Staff Airlines shows estimated open seats on Lufthansa flights before you go.

Flights you can't use
Trains and buses sold under a Lufthansa (LH) flight number can't be used on a staff ticket.
Visas and travel documents
Getting the right passport, visas and vaccination certificates is your job, and you should check they are valid before you set off. Lufthansa takes no responsibility for missing or invalid documents, and if the airline is fined because of them, the fine is passed on to you. Current requirements are on www.lufthansa.com.
- India: you always need a visa, even if you are only transiting.
Baggage
You get the same allowance as a full-fare passenger, but your bags travel only if there is space and the flight's weight limits allow it.
- Cabin bag in Economy: 1 piece, up to 55 × 40 × 20 cm and 8 kg.
- Cabin bags in Business and First: 2 pieces, each up to 55 × 40 × 20 cm and 8 kg.
- Excess baggage is charged at the normal full-fare rates and must be paid in full (see www.lufthansa.com).
- Don't check in anything on behalf of someone else.
Check-in
Check-in deadlines depend on the departure airport: look them up on www.lufthansa.com. If no deadline is given, be checked in at least 60 minutes before departure.
Through check-in to your connection works for confirmed ZED and MIBA tickets. On standby it is sometimes not possible, so leave enough time at every stop to land and check in again.
Special services, children and pets
- Standby passengers can't get special services at all.
- On confirmed tickets, services such as a wheelchair or a pet in the cabin (PETC) must be requested in the booking and confirmed by Lufthansa.
- Advance seat reservations (ASR) aren't available on staff tickets.
- Children under 16 can travel on a discounted staff ticket only with an adult on the same type of ticket.
Dress code
Dress as you would for the office, or smart casual. T-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts, gym shoes and other very casual clothes aren't acceptable. Behave so that paying passengers aren't disturbed and the crew can focus on them. If you don't follow these rules, you can be refused travel.
How to fly standby on Lufthansa
- Check loads before you list
You list for every Lufthansa flight in myIDTravel. Before you do, compare estimated open seats in Staff Airlines for the flights you're considering and list on the emptiest one.
- Plan a backup through the other hub
Lufthansa's main hubs are Frankfurt and Munich. If your flight fills up, look at the same trip through the other hub, or use the Transfer route finder in the app (Premium). Leave extra time at each stop: through check-in isn't always available on standby.
- Ask an agent before you go
Before you leave for the airport, ask an agent in Staff Airlines to check your flight. Agents are airline staff who can see flight loads: when one answers, you see open seats by cabin as they are right now. Requests use tokens; Premium includes them.
- On the day
Check in by your departure airport's deadline, or at least 60 minutes before departure if none is given. With Premium, subscribe to the flight in Staff Airlines for regular status updates.
