How to list for standby on Alaska Airlines

The listing procedure isn't the same for every airline. For international flights, list non-revenue travelers at least 24 hours before departure so the catering count is right.

Flights you can't use

Your ticket covers flights operated by Alaska Airlines, plus flights operated by Hawaiian Airlines, Horizon Air and Skywest that are marketed and sold as Alaska Airlines flights. There are no official embargoes right now.

Visas and travel documents

  • Everyone needs a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport.
  • At check-in, show your employee photo ID badge every time you fly as a non-revenue passenger.
  • Dependents aged 16 and over need their own government photo ID.
  • Outside the USA, every traveler needs proof of citizenship. Expect to need a passport, and in some cases a visa.

Baggage

Checked bags:

  • Employees of other airlines aren't charged for the first two checked bags.
  • You pay all excess and overweight charges yourself; you can pay them at the ticket counter.
  • For the latest size and weight limits, check the baggage policies page on the Alaska Airlines website.

Cabin bags:

  • 1 carry-on bag plus 1 personal item, such as a purse, briefcase or laptop bag.
  • Keep them within the size limits on the website so they fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.
  • Carry-ons are accepted only if there is room on board when you board. If there isn't, your bag is checked free of charge to baggage claim at your final destination.

Check-in

If you listed online, you can check in at alaskaair.com, at an airport kiosk or with a ticket counter agent.

  1. Check in at least 50 minutes before departure. Checking in puts your name on the standby list.
  2. Be at the boarding gate and ready to board at least 50 minutes before the posted departure time.
  3. If a seat opens up, your electronic boarding pass is updated or your name is called at the gate.

Pilots riding the jumpseat keep checking in with gate agents 1 hour before departure.

Boarding, seats and upgrades

  • Sit in the seat you are given and don't ask other passengers to move for you. Your party may be split up on board: be ready for that, or pick another flight that suits you better.
  • If your airline has an agreement for First or Business Class tickets, the minimum age for those seats is 12.
  • Every passenger, non-revs included, must fit in one seat with the armrests down. Non-revenue passengers don't have to buy a second seat: tell the gate agent you need one, and the adjacent seat is blocked as a courtesy according to your boarding priority code.

Special services, children and pets

Infants:

  • Infants need a ticket, on both domestic and international flights. Infant tickets are no longer issued at the ticket counter; myIDTravel and ID90 are being updated so you can ticket infants there.
  • A lap infant can use a child restraint seat on board only if there is an empty seat for it. On a full flight the car seat is checked at the gate with a claim-at-gate tag and handed back to you at the gate on arrival.
  • All car seats must be FAA approved for use on aircraft.

Children traveling alone:

  • Children under 16 can't travel alone on Alaska, Hawaiian, Horizon or Skywest. They must fly with an adult aged 18 or older.

Pets:

  • Other airline non-revenue travelers pay the fees for a pet in the cabin (PETC) and an animal in the hold (AVIH).
  • You must be at least 18 to travel with a pet in the cabin.
  • List your pet in advance by calling Reservations at 1-877-677-2566 to check if there is room on the flight. Within 24 hours of departure, call Reservations again with your confirmation code to confirm the pet, whether it travels in the cabin or in the hold.
  • Your pet is tagged standby and is cleared when you clear the flight.
  • Pet requirements are on AlaskaAir.com.
  • You can't use your travel benefits to carry animals for a pet shelter or any other business.

Service and emotional support animals:

  • Follow the Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air policy; the requirements are on AlaskaAir.com.

Meals:

  • Meals are pre-ordered, and only travelers on confirmed space can pre-order. Standby leisure travelers and space-available duty travelers can't pre-order at the moment.
  • On domestic flights you can buy snacks on board.

Dress code

Casual clothes are fine on Alaska, Hawaiian and Horizon: you just need to look neat and well-groomed. Dirty or ragged clothing and bare feet are never accepted. Use your own judgement, but remember that customer service agents have the final say and can refuse you travel for unsuitable clothing or appearance.

Changes and refunds

  • Ask for a change or refund in the same tool your ticket was issued in: ID90 Travel or myIDTravel.
  • If First or Business Class is full and you choose to sit in Economy, you don't get back the price difference between the tickets.

Good to know

All non-revenue leisure travel is standby, so stay flexible. Know your other flight options to your destination in case flights are full, cancelled or delayed: printing them out and taking them with you can help.

Questions, answered

When does check-in close for Alaska Airlines standby?

50 minutes before departure. You also need to be at the gate, ready to board, at least 50 minutes before the posted departure time.

Can I fly on a Alaska Airlines buddy pass?

Only if a Alaska Airlines employee gives you one. Buddy passes are issued by the airline to its own staff for friends and family, and Alaska Airlines's employee rules decide who can use them and what they cost. Buddy pass travelers fly standby and usually board after employees.

Can I change or refund an Alaska Airlines staff ticket in ID90 Travel or myIDTravel?

Yes. Ask for a change or refund in the same tool your ticket was issued in: ID90 Travel or myIDTravel.

How many bags can I check on Alaska Airlines as another airline's employee?

The first two checked bags are free. Excess and overweight charges are yours to pay. In the cabin you get 1 carry-on and 1 personal item.

Does my infant need a ticket?

Yes, on both domestic and international flights. Infant tickets are no longer issued at the ticket counter.

Can my child travel alone on standby?

No. Children under 16 must travel with an adult aged 18 or older.

What should I wear on Alaska Airlines?

Casual clothes, as long as you look neat and well-groomed. Dirty or ragged clothes and bare feet aren't accepted, and agents can refuse you travel for unsuitable attire.

Which airlines can I fly on ZED fares?

It depends on the ZED and interline agreements of the airline you work for. In Staff Airlines, the partner airlines filter shows only the flights you can board.

Airline rules change often and this summary may be out of date. Always confirm important details with Alaska Airlines’s staff travel department or in the booking tool you use before you travel.
