American Airlines standby & non-rev travel
To fly standby on American Airlines you need a listing in myIDTravel: without one you'll be denied check-in. List at least 48 hours ahead for international flights and 12 hours ahead for all others. Pets, pre-reserved seats and special meals aren't available on staff tickets. Staff Airlines shows estimated open seats on American Airlines flights before you go.

How to list for standby on American Airlines
Every standby (space-available) trip on American needs a listing, and passengers without one are denied check-in. List at least 48 hours before an international flight and at least 12 hours before any other flight.
- If you bought your ZED ticket in myIDTravel and the ticket number starts with 001 (American ticket stock), the listing is created automatically when the ticket is issued. Nothing else to do.
- If your ticket number starts with anything else (for example, your own airline's ticket stock), list in myIDTravel under Manage Bookings & Tickets: no matter how or where you bought the ticket.
- No myIDTravel login? Your airline's travel office can give you the user ID and password.
Your ticket is good on any American or American Eagle flight in the ticketed market within its 90-day validity, whatever flight number and date are printed on it. You don't need to list separately for every flight you might try.
Flights you can't use
- You can fly on flights operated by American Airlines and on everything sold as American Eagle, including Landline bus services marketed as American Eagle.
- Codeshare flights sold under an AA number but operated by another carrier can't be used.
- Flights and markets where American has no traffic rights can't be used.
- Travel to and from Cuba is restricted.
- You can't use a ZED ticket if you already hold an AAdvantage award or a revenue ticket between the same cities on the same day.
Visas and travel documents
Flying on an international or transborder flight? Check the international travel requirements before you go.
Carry every document you need, passport, visas, health certificate, for your destination and for every point along the way, in case you are offloaded en route for commercial or other reasons. American can deny boarding if you don't have the right documents for a transit point.
Baggage
- American's normal allowances apply (see AA.com), except that ZED/MIBA ticket holders don't pay the fee for the first and second checked bag.
- Bags can be checked through to your final American destination.
- Pets can't travel as checked baggage.
Check-in
- Standby personal travel: check in at an airport kiosk or self-service machine, starting 24 hours before departure.
- Positive-space company business travel: check in in the AA app or on www.aa.com, starting 24 hours before departure.
- Because of added security procedures, check in no later than 60 minutes before a domestic flight and 90 minutes before an international one.
- If all your flights are in one booking (PNR), you are checked in automatically on the onward flights and don't need to check in again at connecting AA cities.
Boarding, seats and upgrades
Be at the gate no later than 60 minutes before a domestic departure, or 90 minutes before an international one.
- After airport check-in, keep clear of the ticket lift desk or service center and wait for the gate agent to call your name.
- Check in with the gate agent, who clears your seat.
- Your electronic boarding pass is emailed to the address in the reservation, and you can forward passes to others in your party. If you have no mobile device or can't open the email, ask for a paper boarding pass.
- Tell the gate agent once you have your boarding pass(es), so they can confirm every standby traveler is accounted for.
- Board as soon as you're told and take your assigned seat.
On a connecting trip you get an emailed boarding pass for the first flight only, plus a printed verification card for the later flights. The boarding pass for a connection is emailed once you have a seat on it.
- Staff of other airlines (except oneworld) and their eligible travelers on leisure trips get priority ZED. American's own employees and their guests traveling for personal reasons go before them.
- Boarding order is based on the time you checked in. Your date of joining plays no role.
- If you don't get on, agents move you to the next American flight and you keep your original check-in time on the priority list.
- Don't ask other passengers to move so you get a better seat. If you're asked to change seats or cabin, or to leave the aircraft, do it quickly and quietly.
- Children under 6 aren't allowed in the business cabin.
Special services, children and pets
Staff travelers with disabilities get support similar to what American offers its paying passengers.
Free of charge:
- Meet and assist
- Courtesy wheelchairs, checked personal wheelchairs and special packaging for wheelchair batteries
- Help with connecting flights
- Pre-boarding when needed, once you have a seat
With a charge: therapeutic oxygen, with a fee for each segment. You need a doctor's statement for it.
Not available: special meals, pre-reserved seats, and peanut removal for passengers with peanut allergies.
To add a special service request to your reservation, call AA on 1-888-WE-FLY-AA. If you travel with a battery-powered wheelchair or need therapeutic oxygen, contact American reservations before your trip so they can prepare.
Children
- American doesn't accept unaccompanied children under 16. A child under 16 must travel with an adult on the same ticket type.
- A child on a ZED ticket can't travel with an adult on any positive-space ticket, commercial or staff.
- A child on a positive-space commercial ticket can't travel as an accompanied child with an adult on a ZED ticket. The child can fly as an unaccompanied minor instead, if all of American's commercial unaccompanied minor rules are met, including the UMNR fee.
Pets and service animals ZED/MIBA travelers can't check a pet or take one in the cabin on American or American Eagle flights. Only trained service animals are accepted, and emotional support animals don't count.
- Only dogs individually trained to work or perform tasks for a person with a disability are accepted as service animals.
- Up to two service animals per customer.
- The animal must be harnessed, leashed or tethered in the airport and on board, and must meet existing size limits.
- Before the trip, complete the US Department of Transportation (DOT) Service Animal Air Transportation form about the animal's behavior, training and health. It stays valid for one year.
- Fax the form to American's Special Assistance Desk at 817-967-4715 no later than 48 hours before travel. If you arrange the trip within 48 hours, show it to an airport agent at check-in and allow time for processing, or you risk being denied travel.
Dress code
Always wear clean, neat clothes. Nothing that offends or distracts other passengers: that means nothing overly revealing or vulgar, or against community standards of decency.
How to behave on board and at the airport:
- Don't inconvenience paying passengers, and don't distract ground staff and cabin crew from serving them.
- Don't discuss the price or conditions of your reduced-rate ticket with paying passengers.
- Follow the instructions and decisions of AA staff on duty. If you were treated unfairly, report it through your own staff travel office rather than directly to AA.
- Don't ask for special meals, free alcoholic drinks or headsets, or service kit items. The only exception is medical help you may need in flight.
- You may drink in moderation on board, but employees traveling in uniform won't be served alcohol.
- ZED tickets are for personal leisure travel only. MIBA tickets are for your airline's business needs.
Changes and refunds
- There are no downgrade refunds. If your ZED ticket includes the business cabin and you fly in the main cabin, you don't get back the difference between the business and economy ZED fares.
- Positive-space bookings such as MIBA can't be refunded if you don't cancel before departure.
- ZED tickets are accepted only between the city pairs on the ticket. If you're ticketed on a connection but get a seat on a nonstop, American takes two coupons for that one flight (ticketed MIA-DFW-SEA, accepted MIA-SEA). One coupon can't be used for a multi-sector trip (ticketed MIA-SEA, not valid MIA-DFW-SEA).
- MIBA travelers get rerouting help on American and American Eagle flights only.
Good to know
If you don't get on your intended flight on a ZED or MIBA ticket, you aren't entitled to Denied Boarding Compensation (DBC) and must refuse it if offered.

Questions, answered
Do I need to list in myIDTravel for an American Airlines standby flight?
Yes. A listing is required for all standby travel, and you'll be denied check-in without one. Tickets bought in myIDTravel with a number starting 001 are listed automatically; for any other ticket, list in myIDTravel under Manage Bookings & Tickets, at least 48 hours ahead for international flights and 12 hours ahead for others.
Can I fly on a American Airlines buddy pass?
Only if a American Airlines employee gives you one. Buddy passes are issued by the airline to its own staff for friends and family, and American Airlines's employee rules decide who can use them and what they cost. Buddy pass travelers fly standby and usually board after employees.
Do I pay for checked bags on American as a staff traveler?
American's normal allowances apply, but ZED/MIBA ticket holders don't pay the fee for the first and second checked bag.
When do I need to be at the gate?
No later than 60 minutes before a domestic flight and 90 minutes before an international one. Then wait for the gate agent to call your name.
Can I bring my pet on a staff ticket?
No. ZED/MIBA travelers can't check a pet or take one in the cabin. Only trained service dogs are accepted, with the US DOT Service Animal Air Transportation form.
What should I wear when flying standby on American?
Clean, neat clothes that aren't overly revealing, vulgar or otherwise offensive or distracting to other passengers.
Which airlines can I fly on ZED fares?
It depends on the ZED and interline agreements of the airline you work for. In Staff Airlines, the partner airlines filter shows only the flights you can board.
Airline rules change often and this summary may be out of date. Always confirm important details with American Airlines’s staff travel department or in the booking tool you use before you travel.
