JSX staff travel & standby

IATA XEICAO JSXUnited States ›

All non-revenue listings on JSX are made in myIDTravel: don't call reservations or go to the airport to list. Aircraft have only 30 seats and very few no-shows, so trying standby on a full flight isn't recommended, and some airports and routes are embargoed. Staff Airlines shows estimated open seats on JSX flights before you go.

How to list for standby on JSX

List every non-revenue trip in myIDTravel. Only you and the eligible dependants and travel companions shown in myIDTravel (if your airline's agreement includes them) can fly standby on JSX. If you can't get into myIDTravel, ask your own airline's pass bureau for help. Don't call the reservations number or come to the airport to list, unless you are a jumpseating flight crew member.

  1. In myIDTravel, select JSX (XE) as the airline before you search. Only nonstop and direct flights appear in the results.
  2. To build your own connection, use a multi-city search or make separate listings. Separate listings for each leg are recommended, because they make refunds easier.
  3. Once you've paid for the listing, you get a six-character record locator (PNR). Keep it with you: JSX is ticketless, so there's no ticket number.

If you hit a listing error, use the email address on the ID Agreements page. Include the traveler's name, travel dates, routes and the exact error message; screenshots of the error help.

Flights you can't use

  • All JSX flights to and from SNA, because of airport restrictions.
  • ClubJSX Member Only flights to and from TEB.
  • Private charters and "members only" routes: only scheduled JSX flights are open to non-revenue travel.
  • Any route and date on which you have ever held a confirmed JSX seat, however far ahead you cancelled it. This includes co-terminal cities: San Francisco Bay Area (OAK, CCR) and Los Angeles Area (BUR, LAX, SMO). For example, if you had a confirmed BUR–OAK booking on June 15, you can't fly non-revenue on BUR–OAK, SMO–OAK, BUR–CCR or LAX–CCR that day. The opposite direction or a different market is fine.
  • Flights or routes that JSX embargoes for a set period for operational reasons. These are shown on the ID Agreements page in myIDTravel. Don't ask Customer Support or an Airport Service Concierge to list you on them.

Flights to or from Cabo San Lucas (CSW) must be listed at least 48 hours before departure because of government requirements, and myIDTravel enforces this strictly. If you aren't accepted on a CSW flight, you can't relist on any flight leaving less than 48 hours from then.

Baggage

  • Space-available travelers: 2 bags, up to 50 lbs each.
  • Positive-space travelers: 3 bags, up to 50 lbs each.
  • Overweight, oversize or extra bags cost the standard $50 fee and are taken only if payload allows, after all revenue customers' bags are on board.
  • Checked bags may be inspected under TSA regulations.

The aircraft have no overhead bins, so check full-size carry-on bags. A personal item goes under the seat in front of you, and the flight attendant can put a jacket or coat in the closet.

Non-revenue bags are accepted without liability for loss or damage. If a bag goes missing, airport staff will do their best to find it and make it available for pickup at any JSX station, but JSX won't ship it.

Check-in

Come to the counter at least 30 minutes, but no more than one hour, before scheduled departure to have your photo ID checked. If loads allow, you may be cleared then; on a full flight you may have to wait until check-in closes to be cleared or moved to the next available flight. You can also add yourself to the standby list by checking in online up to 24 hours before departure. Departure lounges are small, so don't go in earlier than two hours before departure.

You need your employee badge only if you are eligible for the flight deck jumpseat and plan to ride in it, but it's worth carrying it every time. Don't wear it unless you are in uniform or in the jumpseat.

If you book your own point-to-point connection, leave enough time to collect your bags and check in for the next flight. JSX's private facilities usually make this work with at least 30 minutes with bags or 20 minutes without, but tight connections are risky when there is disruption, so have a backup plan.

Boarding, seats and upgrades

Standby is always space available and subject to any payload limits needed for safe operation. The priority order is:

  • A1: disrupted revenue customers.
  • B1: late-show revenue customers (the "flat tire" rule).
  • B2: revenue customers on voluntary same-day standby.
  • C1: positive space waiting for a seat assignment.
  • C2: JSX duty travel.
  • C3: partner airline duty travel.
  • C4: other (non-partner) airline duty travel.
  • D1: JSX leisure and commuter travel.
  • E1: partner airline leisure travel.
  • E2: other (non-partner) airline leisure travel.
  • E3: other airlines' commuting flight crew (jumpseat agreement).

Within each category, priority goes by check-in time. Don't keep asking airport staff where you are on the list: they clear it in order. You may not be cleared until 5–10 minutes before departure, depending on no-shows, so be ready to board as soon as your name is called and you're handed a boarding pass. If you don't take it when called, the next traveler on the list gets the seat.

If you don't get on, airport staff can move you to the next available flight on the same route. For a different route, cancel and relist in myIDTravel.

Once cleared, you may be asked which seat you prefer if more than one is free. If you need a particular seat because of a disability, tell the agent at check-in; otherwise sit in the seat on your boarding pass. Never ask a revenue passenger on board to swap seats.

Special services, children and pets

  • Lap infants can't be booked in myIDTravel. Tell airport staff at check-in and be ready to show proof of age.
  • There's currently no way to list an infant in its own seat. When enough seats are free, airport staff will try to give an adult with a lap infant an empty seat alongside, but they won't ask a revenue passenger to move for it.
  • Service animals and small pets in a carrier travel on the same terms as for revenue customers. If more than five pets are booked on one flight, revenue customers' pets go first.
  • Large dogs that need the seat next to you aren't currently accepted for non-revenue travel.
  • Passengers under 14 can't fly without an accompanying adult.
  • If your airline's agreement includes travel companions, they can't travel unaccompanied.

Dress code

Wear clean, well-kept clothes in good taste. Unless you're in uniform, other customers shouldn't be able to tell that you work for an airline or are traveling non-revenue. These aren't acceptable:

  • Flip-flops (dress sandals are fine).
  • Clothes with explicit or offensive words, images or symbols.
  • Revealing tank tops or halter tops.
  • Ripped or torn clothes, including jeans.
  • Sweatpants, jogging pants, yoga pants or other lycra-type trousers.
  • Very short shorts or skirts, or very baggy clothes.
  • Beachwear or swimwear, visible underwear and pyjamas.

In the jumpseat, wear at least relaxed business casual (smart jeans and a collared shirt) with closed-toe shoes, and keep your employee badge with the word “CREW” visible. Otherwise, take your badge off unless you're in uniform.

If your clothes don't meet these standards, you'll be asked to change or may be denied transportation. Airport staff and pilots have the final say.

Revenue customers always come first. Anything that spoils their experience, including on social media, can get you denied transportation. Blend in, don't draw attention to yourself or talk about non-revenue travel, and follow instructions from airport staff, flight attendants and pilots quickly and politely, even if that means getting off the aircraft.

If you feel you've been treated unfairly, don't raise it at the airport or on board. Follow the crew's instructions, finish your trip, and take the complaint to your own airline's pass bureau. You are responsible for your dependants and companions, so make sure anyone traveling without you knows JSX's rules. Violations are reported to your employer's pass bureau, and JSX can bar you from future travel.

Changes and refunds

  • To switch to another flight on the same route, relist in myIDTravel at any time, unless you've already checked bags at the airport.
  • Airport staff can move you to an earlier or later flight on the same route, unless you didn't check in before your listed flight left. Revenue customers get agent help first.
  • If you don't check in before your listed flight departs, that segment is deleted automatically when the flight closes, and staff can't move you until you relist your PNR in myIDTravel.
  • A different routing always needs a new listing, even if you're already at the airport. You can list for more than one route in advance if you're worried about getting into myIDTravel on the road, but you don't need several listings or check-ins on the same route.

Refunds:

  • Cancelling in myIDTravel within 6 months of purchase refunds you automatically, in full or in part.
  • For an error, or a refund more than 6 months after you listed, contact the JSX Pass Bureau (contact details are on the ID Agreements page in myIDTravel). Include the record locator, traveler names, travel dates and routes.
  • Refunds go back to the original credit card and usually take 3–5 business days, but can take up to two weeks once started.
  • Manual refunds are started within three business days of receiving the request, and you get an email as soon as one starts.

Good to know

  • JSX is a DOT Part 380 public charter carrier that runs scheduled commuter flights under FAA Part 135. It flies from private terminals or FBOs, not standard passenger terminals. Destinations, facility addresses and parking are on jsx.com.
  • The fleet is customised Embraer ERJ-135s and ERJ-145s with 30 passenger seats and one flight deck jumpseat, crewed by two pilots and one flight attendant.
  • Non-revenue travelers aren't eligible for compensation for delays, cancellations or denied boarding. If you're offered it, you must refuse.
  • Complimentary snacks and drinks in the lounges and on board are yours to enjoy in moderation. Don't take extras with you when you leave.
  • If you're 21 or older, you can have one alcoholic drink per flight. No alcohol at all if you're traveling as a jumpseater (in the physical jumpseat or not), going on duty within 8 hours of arrival, or in uniform. Jumpseat riders follow the same FAA alcohol rules as the working crew.
  • Jumpseat agreements for CASS-eligible pilots and dispatchers are separate from leisure travel agreements. Eligible jumpseaters can take the flight deck jumpseat or a free cabin seat, depending on availability and CASS verification. More at jumpseatinfo.org or from your Flight Ops department.
  • If your airline doesn't have an agreement with JSX yet, tell your pass bureau you're interested.

Questions, answered

How do I list for a JSX standby flight in myIDTravel?

Select JSX (XE) as the airline in myIDTravel, search, and pay for the listing. You get a six-character record locator (PNR) instead of a ticket number.

When should I check in for JSX standby?

Be at the counter at least 30 minutes, but no more than one hour, before departure. You can also check in online up to 24 hours ahead.

How much baggage can I take on JSX?

Two bags up to 50 lbs each on standby, three on positive space. There are no overhead bins, so check full-size carry-ons.

Should I try JSX standby on a full flight?

JSX doesn't recommend it: its aircraft have only 30 seats and very few passengers miss their flights.

Can children fly alone on JSX?

No. Passengers under 14 can't fly without an accompanying adult.

Which airlines can I fly on ZED fares?

It depends on the ZED and interline agreements of the airline you work for. In Staff Airlines, the partner airlines filter shows only the flights you can board.
