If you don't list for a United Airlines flight when you buy your ticket, list in the UA Web Flight Listing Tool through ID90 Travel: at least 48 hours ahead for international flights and 12 hours ahead for all others. The name on the listing must match your e-ticket exactly, and seats are normally cleared automatically 30 minutes (domestic US) or 1 hour (international) before departure. How to list for standby on United Airlines

If you don't list at the same time as you buy your ticket, list at least 48 hours before an international flight and at least 12 hours before any other flight. Listings are made in the UA Web Flight Listing Tool, which you reach with your ID90 Travel account at www.id90travel.com.

If you already have an ID90 Travel account, log in at www.id90travel.com/login or use the ID90 Travel mobile app (App Store and Google Play). If you don't, create one:

  1. Go to www.id90travel.com/create-account and pick your airline from the company list.
  2. Enter your employee number and your company email address.
  3. Set a password of at least 8 characters with at least 1 uppercase letter, 1 lowercase letter, 1 number and 1 special character.
  4. Verify the account with your company email address. If you don't have one, contact ID90 Travel Customer Support at [email protected].

When you list:

  • The name on the listing must be exactly the same as on your e-ticket, including first, middle and last name.
  • If your e-ticket is a round trip, the listing must be a round trip too.
  • You can't hold several leisure bookings in different cabins on the same routing for one trip. Choose the class you want when you book, within what the ZED agreement with United allows.

Flights you can't use

You can use all United Express flights operated by Mesa (YV), Republic (YX), SkyWest (OO), Go Jet (G7) and Commutair (C5), and the bus between Newark (EWR) and Allentown, Pennsylvania (ABE).

You can't use:

  • Codeshare flights operated by Star Alliance or other codeshare partners.
  • Ferry/positioning flights and cargo-only flights.
  • The bus between Denver (DEN) and Fort Collins, Colorado (FNL).

As of June 19, 2025, flights between Newark (EWR) and Dubai (DXB) are suspended because of airspace safety concerns in the Middle East. United reviews this on an ongoing basis, and the route can restart or be suspended again at any time.

Cape Town (CPT) and Johannesburg (JNB) are not under an embargo, but capacity on all flights between CPT/JNB and the U.S. (IAD/EWR) is likely to be limited in both directions. The reasons are weight restrictions linked to aircraft type, flight distance, airport and weather conditions, and cargo. Seats may be held, so you may not get on even if the flight has empty seats. Take this into account when you travel to, through or from CPT or JNB, and have a backup plan.

On these flights you wait at the ticket counter for a seat and can't go to the gate without a boarding pass that shows a seat. If you connect from an international flight in CPT, you must clear customs and immigration and enter the country, then go to the ticket counter to finish check-in and wait for clearance. In JNB you don't need to enter the country: go straight to the Connections desk, then wait at the gate for seat clearance.

Baggage

Checked bags:

  • Employees, retirees and their travel eligibles don't pay the first checked bag fee, up to 50 lbs (23 kg).
  • All pass riders pay excess and overweight bag fees at the same rates as commercial customers. Check them with the bag fee calculator on united.com; if you've already booked, the "My flights" tab there shows the details for your trip.
  • In some cases the policy for paying passengers allows more free baggage. Then you get that more generous allowance too.
  • On flights within the U.S., Positive Passenger Bag Match (PPBM) doesn't necessarily apply: a checked bag may go to its tagged destination even if you don't board the flight. Keep this in mind before you check a bag.

Cabin bags: you get the same allowance as a commercial passenger on a normal Economy ticket (not Basic Economy). The rules are on united.com.

Check-in

Check in up to 24 hours before departure in the United mobile app (Apple and Android), on United.com or at an airport kiosk. On international trips you can also scan your passport and some visas yourself in the app or at a kiosk.

To add your booking to the United app before check-in:

  1. Tap "Trips" at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Tap "ADD A TRIP" and enter the booking details.
  3. Make sure the "Add to my device" switch is on, then tap "NEXT".

The trip is then saved in the app, which makes check-in easier. It also turns on the Travel Ready Center: it tells you which documents you need, such as a passport, and within 3 days before travel lets you upload them for review so things go faster at the airport.

Boarding, seats and upgrades

United clears most standby seats automatically with its Standby Process Automation (SPA). Seats are normally cleared 30 minutes before departure on domestic US flights and 1 hour before on international flights. Some flights clear earlier or later, depending on loads and how the flight is operating.

  • If your mobile number or email is saved in your booking, you get a text or email once your seat is cleared.
  • If your booking is loaded in the United app, your boarding pass appears there and you board when your group is called. You can also change your seat in the app, unless the gate agent has put the flight under gate control.
  • If you don't use the app, or didn't save a phone number or email in the booking, watch the TV monitors at the gate to see when you're cleared, then ask the agent for a paper boarding pass. You'll be asked for identification.

United counts premium economy as a premium cabin. If you don't want to be charged a business class fare when you're cleared into premium economy, tell the agent at clearance that you don't wish to travel in premium economy.

Special services, children and pets

Employees of other airlines and their family members can bring a pet in the cabin on United flights, subject to limits by destination, aircraft and cabin. As a pass traveler you don't need to reserve this in advance, but all other rules and fees are the same as for paying passengers. Details are on the Traveling With Pets page on United.com.

Dress code

Look neat, clean and well-groomed, and wear something respectful of everyone around you: staff, other pass riders and customers. Clean jeans or leggings without holes or tears are fine, and so are shorts no more than three inches above the knee.

At the airport and on the plane, avoid:

  • Revealing clothing that shows your midriff or underwear, such as cropped tops or see-through clothes.
  • Sleepwear, underwear or swimwear worn as everyday clothes. You may change into United-provided Polaris sleepwear during the flight.
  • Skirts or shorts more than three inches above the knee when you stand.
  • Clothes with tears or holes, or with derogatory images or words.
  • Rubber beach-style flip-flops, or bare feet.

The list isn't complete, so use your judgment. Customer service has the final say on anything to do with the dress code.

Changes and refunds

Once your listing is made, you can change dates and flight numbers by calling the ePass desk in the U.S. at +1-866-359-3727, open 24/7. This change is free. Any change to the routing, including connection cities, means cancelling the existing ticket and listing and creating new ones.

Refunds:

  • Submit refunds for unused tickets and downgrade refunds (where the agreement allows them) no later than a year after the ticket was issued. Ask as early as you can, so there's time to resubmit if something goes wrong.
  • Request a refund for an unused ticket in the same tool you bought it in: myIDTravel for a myIDTravel ticket, ID90 Travel for an ID90 Travel ticket.
  • Whether you can get a downgrade refund depends on the agreement between the airlines. If you're not sure, ask your airline.
  • Request a refund for flying in a lower cabin than you paid for on united.com/refunds. You don't need to log in to MileagePlus: if a login prompt appears, close it and continue as a guest. Explain the reason on the form, for example "Purchased travel in business class, but accommodated in economy class." Processing can take up to 14 days.
  • There is no downgrade refund from business class to premium economy: United treats premium economy as a premium cabin and has no ZED agreements that include premium economy travel.

Good to know

Onboard food and drinks can only be paid for contactlessly. Before you fly, save a credit card in your MileagePlus profile, then be logged in to MileagePlus in the United app. The app only accepts U.S. or Canadian credit cards; add a card from anywhere else on the united.com website.

At these airports, departure taxes and other fees can be paid only by credit or debit card, not in cash: BZE (Belize City), BOG (Bogota), EZE (Buenos Aires), GUA (Guatemala City), LIM (Lima), MGA (Managua), UIO (Quito), SJO (San Jose), SAP (San Pedro Sula), SAL (San Salvador), SCL (Santiago), TGU (Tegucigalpa), LIR (Liberia), PTY (Panama City) and RTB (Roatan). In GIG (Rio de Janeiro) and GRU (Sao Paulo), local regulations mean cash is still accepted.

How to fly standby on United Airlines

  1. Check loads, then list on time

If you don't list when you buy your ticket, list at least 48 hours before an international flight and 12 hours before any other flight. Check estimated loads in Staff Airlines before the deadline, so you list on the flight with the best chances.

  2. Plan a backup through another hub

United's biggest hubs are Denver, Chicago O'Hare and Newark. If your flight fills up, look at other United flights the same day or a routing through another hub. The Transfer route finder in the app (Premium) suggests connections.

  3. Ask an agent before you go

Before you leave for the airport, ask an agent in Staff Airlines to check your flight. Agents are airline staff who can see flight loads: when one answers, you see open seats by cabin as they are right now. Requests use tokens; Premium includes them.

  4. On the day

United clears most standby seats automatically, normally 30 minutes before departure on domestic US flights and 1 hour before on international flights. Keep your booking in the United app to see when you clear, and with Premium, subscribe to the flight in Staff Airlines for regular status updates.

Questions, answered

How do I list for a United Airlines standby flight in ID90 Travel?

If you didn't list when you bought your ticket, list in the UA Web Flight Listing Tool, which you reach with your ID90 Travel account: at least 48 hours ahead for international flights and 12 hours ahead for other flights. The name must match your e-ticket exactly.

Can I fly on a United Airlines buddy pass?

Only if a United Airlines employee gives you one. Buddy passes are issued by the airline to its own staff for friends and family, and United Airlines's employee rules decide who can use them and what they cost. Buddy pass travelers fly standby and usually board after employees.

When will I know if I've cleared standby on United?

Seats are normally cleared automatically 30 minutes before domestic US flights and 1 hour before international flights. If your phone number or email is in the booking, you get a text or email; otherwise watch the gate monitors.

Do I pay for checked bags on United as a pass rider?

Employees, retirees and their travel eligibles don't pay the first checked bag fee, up to 50 lbs (23 kg). Excess and overweight bags are charged at the same rates as for commercial customers.

What can I wear when flying standby on United?

Neat, clean clothes. Clean jeans, leggings and shorts no more than three inches above the knee are fine; revealing clothes, sleepwear worn as clothing, ripped clothes, beach flip-flops and bare feet are not.

Can I change my United listing after it's made?

You can change dates and flight numbers free of charge by calling the ePass desk at +1-866-359-3727, open 24/7. Changing the routing means cancelling the ticket and listing and creating new ones.

Which airlines can I fly on ZED fares?

It depends on the ZED and interline agreements of the airline you work for. In Staff Airlines, the partner airlines filter shows only the flights you can board.

Airline rules change often and this summary may be out of date. Always confirm important details with United Airlines’s staff travel department or in the booking tool you use before you travel. Staff Airlines is not responsible for denied boarding, missed flights or other losses. Found a mistake? Let us know.
