Canadian North staff travel & standby
Every Canadian North flight needs a listing, and myIDTravel creates it automatically when you book. Check in at least 120 minutes before departure, expect one free 23 kg bag, and follow a detailed dress code that rules out sportswear, T-shirts and shorts. Staff Airlines shows estimated open seats on Canadian North flights before you go.

How to list for standby on Canadian North
A listing is required on every Canadian North flight. When you book through myIDTravel, the listing is made automatically.
Flights you can't use
- Codeshare flights not operated by Canadian North.
- All charter flights.
Visas and travel documents
For international trips, carry a valid passport and the visas you need for your destination and for every scheduled stop on the way, in case you have to be off-loaded there.
Baggage
Checked baggage:
- Staff of other airlines can check 1 piece of up to 23 kg (50 lb).
- Canadian North's own current and retired employees, their eligible spouses or travel partners, children and parents or parents-in-law get 2 free pieces; their guests get 1.
- A collapsible stroller, a car seat and a walker can be checked at no extra charge.
- Oversized and overweight bags follow the same rules and fees as for paying passengers (see www.canadiannorth.com). A bag of 158 to 292 cm in total length + width + height costs $100.00 extra, and this amount may change.
- Pieces over 45 kg or over 292 cm aren't accepted as checked baggage: send them as cargo.
- Put an ID tag on the outside of every checked bag; a second tag inside is recommended.
- Your bags may be loaded only if there is space, and they may not travel on the same flight as you.
- Damaged, delayed or lost bags are handled the same way as for paying passengers.
Cabin baggage:
- Canadian North enforces Transport Canada size limits. A sizer is available at check-in so you can see whether your bags fit.
- Up to 2 pieces per passenger, each no larger than 9 × 16 × 22.5 inches.
- Choose bags that fit under the seat, and leave the overhead bins for paying customers.
Check-in
Be checked in at least 120 minutes before the scheduled departure. You can check in online, but standby passengers can't use the kiosks.
Before you go, check the current Canadian airport security rules on what you can't take with you: catsa-acsta.gc.ca
Through check-in to your connection is available to standby passengers. If you are bumped along the way, you are not entitled to compensation.
Boarding, seats and upgrades
Seat requests aren't allowed on staff travel. If the flight isn't full, the check-in agent may offer you an aisle or a window seat, depending on what's free. Even an assigned seat can be changed for commercial reasons, and you must move if check-in staff or the crew ask you to.
Special services, children and pets
- Pets: bring your own kennel for any animal in the cabin or the hold (PETC/AVIH). Kennels don't count towards your baggage allowance, and the same fees and rules apply as for paying passengers: see www.canadiannorth.com.
- Special meals can't be pre-booked on staff tickets. If you or your companions need a special diet, bring enough food of your own for the whole flight.
- Children under 16 can travel on a discounted staff ticket only with an adult on the same type of ticket.
- If you travel with an infant, you can check a car seat and a fully collapsible stroller free of charge.
Dress code
Look neat, clean and well groomed, and dress conservatively and in good taste. Clean jeans are fine. The list below shows what is not acceptable, and you can't change your outfit once you are in flight.
Clothing you can't wear:
- Beachwear and sportswear, including sweatpants, jogging suits, rugby pants and workout clothes.
- Tank tops, T-shirts, sweatshirts, muscle shirts and aloha shirts.
- Shorts, leggings and very short miniskirts, including skorts and culottes.
- Revealing, tight-fitting or see-through clothes, or anything that shows the midriff.
- Clothes that are dirty or worn, with holes, patches, frays or jagged edges.
Footwear you can't wear:
- Beach footwear, including flip-flops.
- Very casual sandals, such as those with cork, foam, plastic or wood soles.
- Men's shoes without socks.
- Shoes that aren't clean and in good condition.
Children under 12 should be well groomed and dressed in clothes suitable for travel.
